Sanya Bay, the beach in my heart

A story of hunting and love

The town of Sanya (half a million inhabitants) is situated in the south of Hainan. If you want to have a bird`s-eye view of the whole town, take the cabelway up to the big sculpture highest on the Deer-turn-head Park. In the north direction, you will see the coastline of Sanya Bay mile after mile, and the city on the right side of the palms and the beach. You will also see the highest mountain in Hainan, Five Finger Mountain. The views are wonderful.

This is the story behind the sculpture:

A young hunter started to hunt a deer up in the Five Finger Mountain. Day after day he followed the fleeing animal. In the darkness of the tropic night they rested until the sunrise. Every morning the deer tried to escape but the hunter continued the hunt. After several days the deer arrived in Sanya Bay and fled up to the highest peak, close to the sea.

Now the right time had come, the hunter thought. In that moment, when he was going to shoot the killing arrow, a sudden thunderstorm and a stroke of lightning struck the peak. The deer turned its head, and at the same moment it turned into a beautiful girl. They immediately fell in love and stayed in the landscape. Their children got children and so fort That is the beginning of the Sanya culture.

The white sculpture on the peak is a symbol for Sanya town. You can see it in many places in the city and from the seaside. Take a motorbike or a taxi up there.

A golden morning

Now to Sanya Bay. From my balcony, I can see that the sun has started to glimmer on the water on the other side of the street. A highway of light is opened from the beach over to the small islands some kilometres away. The sand along Sanya Bay lies bare by the ebb. I am running northwards on the packed damp sand, a perfect track for a barefoot runner. Time is 7.15, in the morning. It is mid November. Outside the waterway of light a group of swimmers are training long-distance swimming in the tropical warm water.

People are collecting beautiful shells on the beach. I arrange a picture of shells meeting the sun and the sea. Between the street and the beach, lines of beautiful cocopalms provide shadow, even if the brilliant sunshine is finding ways through the crowns of the trees.

I say Ni-hao to the moving people along the beach and they answer Hello. There is a smiling, intuitive communication with only one or two words. Young girls and boys are jogging to the school. The say Hello, how are You? My name is...What is Your name? The English language is growing very fast in Chinese schools.

This is a very, very Chinese beach. Many of the visitors are tourists from Beijing, Shanghai, Hong Kong, Guangzhou and so on. Others are fishermen and people from Sanya city on the other side of the street. They used to come here in the morning, on their way to work. There is no commerce, except from some women selling pearls.

It is very colourful and fascinating to study the Chinese psysical culture, gymnastics and dancing. Women and men in a group are flourishing swords with red banderoles in perfect rhytmhic. Another group is dancing with sunfans. When the dancers suddenly open them, all at the same time, it smalls very high. Subsequently, the dans continues. That is a richly coloured type of exercise. Some young girls move rackets rhytmically, keeping tennis balls on the rackets without loosing them. The cooperation in every group along the beach is perfect.

My jogging along Sanya Bay provides experience of many different ways of physcical training, interesting, charming and healthy. There are training programs for everyone, from children to the old. There is also music for dancing, in pairs. I start dancing with an old woman in my own age. People around us enjoyed it very much.

In the shadow, an old music teacher is learning how to play an very old string instrument. Some people are standing in the waterfront with their faces against the sea - singing a song I don't understand. However, I feel that express happiness, a song to celebrate life. Some people around is deep into meditation or yoga.

Calligraphy in sand

Another activity is hand writing with a long shell pen, page after page of beautiful calligraphy. I wonder, what is the meaning of the text? Perhaps a protest against something that is wrong. It is easier to guess that the young beautiful teenage girls are writing the names of their boyfriends in the sand.

Anglers are catching very small fish from the sea. Others are digging for small crabs in the sand. A group of women are waiting for a fishing boat returning with its catch of fresh fish. When the fishermen are entering the beach with their catch, they are very intensive in looking after good fish to buy.

I run back around a beautiful garden with flowers. On the green grass fishing-nets are left to dry in the sun. This is a very colourful view. The line of palms continues north. At this point I have run about five kilometres. There is now only little water left in my bottle. Now I am running against the very strong sun. When I have returned to my starting point, swiming in the tropical warm water is like a dream, compared with the cold climate in my country of Sweden.

In the evenings, Sanya Bay is also filled with beach life and for me exotic folklore. Dance, fireworks, singing and walking along the beach. But first of all the sunset, a spectacular experience every evening. The sun can set like a big, newly just cut orange, sometimes hiding in the light fog.

Sanya Bay is the beach in my heart, because it is the most Chinese of the three beaches in Sanya. Yalong Beach is wonderful, just like Dadonghai Beach. Both of them give a lot of interesting experiences for tourists and have wonderful and clear water and white clean sand.
